Korean born Canadian cellist Dongkyun An received his very first musical education from Mrs.Chun-Ja Choi in Korea at the age of 13. After moving to Edmonton, Canada, he continued receiving guidance from Tanya Prochazka, and Colin Ryan, and David Tutt.
Dongkyun is currently pursuing his musical studies at Zürcher Hochschule der Künste in Switzerland under world renowned English cello soloist Raphael Wallfisch, and baroque cello studies under Swiss cellist Martin Zeller.
Apart from his studies in Europe, he has received much guidance from such international cellists as Pieter Wiespelwey, Gary Hoffman, Shauna Rolston, Andres Diaz, Hans Jensen, Gavriel Lipkind, Matt Haimovitz, and Anner Bylsma.
He has appeared as concerto soloist with the Edmonton Youth Orchestra, Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and recently with the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra in Czech Republic as well as performing recitals and chamber music concerts in various parts of Europe and North America.
In addition to his studies and performances, He was awarded the 1st prize winner at the 2010 Montreal Symphony Orchestra Competition. GAIA Award at the 2011 GAIA Chamber Music Festival in Thun, Switzerland where the prize includes performances at the 2012 GAIA festival as a guest artist.
Recently, he has been awarded 2nd prize at the 18th International Johannes Brahms Competition in Pörtschach, Austria.
His studies are generously supported by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Anne Burrows Music Foundation, and the Winspear Fund in Edmonton, and the Sylva Gelber Music Foundation in Ottawa.
